Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement. Clinical Kinesiologists are experts in anatomy, physiology and the biomechanics of human movement.
In Canada, kinesiology is a professional designation as well as an area of study. In the province of Ontario the scope has been officially defined as, “the assessment of human movement and performance and its rehabilitation and management to maintain, rehabilitate or enhance movement and performance”
A clinical kinesiology is ideally qualified to implement an exercise program when an injury, impairment or anatomical variant exists.
For example, with knee or hip osteoarthritis or a joint replacement, the normal biomechanics of the joint have been altered. Compressional loading, alignment and muscle firing patterns are all deviated from normal – contributing to pain or abnormal function.
A Clinical Kinesiologist can work within the variants of the system and create an exercise program that improves overall biomechanics – usually decreasing pain – while not creating pain in the process.
Working with a clinical kinesiologist is often a bridge between suffering an orthopaedic/musculoskeletal injury or having a surgery and returning to normal activities including sports.
Scientific research exists to support the effectiveness of specialized exercise programs in reducing symptoms of depression, reducing risk of cardiovascular disease and other metabolic diseases, improving sleep, enhancing immune function, reducing cancer risk and improving body composition even post-menopause.
