Cardiovascular Exercise During Pregnancy
I was recently asked by one of my pregnant clients if it is detrimental to NOT exercise during pregnancy. I am well versed in the positive effects of exercise during pregnancy but was unsure if there are adverse consequences associated with non-exercising.
The current guideline put forth by The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) states that active women should continue to exercise throughout pregnancy. Inactive women or non-exercisers should commence exercise in the second trimester at a dosage of 30 minutes of moderate exercise 3-4 x/week.
Exercising during pregnancy has a multitude of benefits including:
- Maintaining a health weight gain during pregnancy. The recommended weight gain during pregnancy varies according to you ore-pregnancy weight. If you would like more information on this topic you can contact me directly. firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Maintaining healthy glucose control/decreasing the risk of gestational diabetes which has numerous risks for mom and baby
- Increasing energy levels/decreasing pregnancy related fatigue
- Stabilizing mood, some research suggests that exercise during pregnancy lowers the risk of post-partum depression.
In summary – exercise is recommended but not absolutely necessary during pregnancy. Pregnant women can maintain a healthy weight via dietary factors as well.
